Run Your Race!

Written by: Missy Cooper

If you are anything like me, your tv has been tuned to NBC these last few weeks, watching the most elite athletes in the world compete on the ultimate stage in Tokyo – The Olympics. I have jumped for joy with gymnasts, flinched watching swimmers inch in mere hundredths of a second ahead of their competitors, and I've even found myself watching fencing!

When the Olympics aren't on, we are a house that loves sports movies - Rudy, 42, Remember the Titans, Eddie the Eagle... we'll watch them all. There is just something so captivating about an individual or a team who has dedicated their entire life to a goal - it is never without great struggle and great sacrifice.

Maybe that's why Paul, long before the first Olympics or sports movies were a thing, wrote this:

"Friends, don't get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I've got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward – to Jesus. I'm off and running, and I'm not turning back. So let's keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us." - Philippians 3:13-15 (MSG)

Paul knew we would understand the effort, the struggles, the dedication it takes to run a race well. He also knew this race – our race of life – would need encouragement through those struggles and sacrifices, and so, he gives us this picture. It's not a gold medal at the end – it's better!

You may feel like your feet are bleeding, or your lungs are straining for air – but keep running, friend. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus – and run!
